Shanghainese Dialect Initiative
The Shanghainese language (alternatively known as the Hu language) is a dialect of Chinese that is primarily spoken in the central districts in the city of Shanghai. Although it was once prevalent in the entire Shanghai region, the language suffers through decline in the modern day, primarily due to the Chinese government's promotion of standard, mandarin Chinese. Unlike many other dialects, Shanghainese remains mutually unintelligible with Mandarin Chinese.
